La Liga - Real Madrid win Liga title
/2007-06-18/
La Liga - Real Madrid won the Liga title after they came back to beat Mallorca 3-1 at home while Barcelona hammered neighbours Nastic away 5-1.
Madrid went a goal down in the Santiago Bernabeu while Barcelona went three goals clear by half time. However while Barca completed the job in the Nou Estadi and their fans held their ears to radios, Madrid picked off three goals to match the result and secure the championship.
Madrid started off sloppily, lacking the organisation we have seen from them in recent times under Fabio Capello. Mallorca found space on the left and Juan Arango met the ball inside with a low shot that cannoned off the outside of the near post.
Barcelona thought they had the lead on five minutes when Samuel Eto'o scored inside the near post following good work by Lionel Messi and Gianluca Zambrotta, but the Italian was harshly ruled offside and so the goal was disallowed.
Eto'o was then put into a great position eight yards out by a scooped Ronaldinho pass and somehow contrived to volley over the bar.
However the assembled Cules in the Nou Estadi had plenty to celebrate in the 17th minute though. News filtered through of a breakthrough in the Spanish capital - and it was Mallorca who has scored it.
Arango played a pass for Varela to latch onto and he scored low into the bottom corner to silence the home fans, so expectant during a week of build-up.
It was no less than the Islanders deserved as they took advantage of some poor positional defensive play. Capello was fuming on the touchline over what he clearly perceived as complacency among his players.
19 minutes in Beckham struck a sweet free-kick towards the top corner that Miguel Angel Moya kept out by standing tall but mishandled. Simultaneously in Tarragona Eto'o showed his desire to bag a third straight title when he connected with a cross and the ball smacked against the post and flew to safety.
Nastic, saying farewell to the Primera Division after their one-season sojourn, were not at the races as Barcelona piled up over 65 percent of the possession and a minute after the Cameroon striker's effort Carles Puyol scored the crucial opener. Lionel Messi caused problems from the right and his low cross was diverted into the net by captain Puyol after the centre half had foraged forward into space.
Robinho went close for Los Merengues and Eto'o had another goal disallowed for offside as Madrid began to come into the match and Barca continued to exert a stranglehold on theirs.
Ronaldinho was a menace on the left for Barcelona and Messi a big handful from the right. The wily Argentina star cut inside and cracked a shot into the far corner to set the Barca fans dancing as they contemplated an unlikely domestic triumph.
Certainly things were not looking good for Madrid. Raul failed to put across a decent ball when fed at the back post and Ruud van Nistelrooy was forced off with an injury collected in an earlier tangle with Angelos Basinas to reduce the goal threat.
A final warning that they would not be allowed to rely on events in Catalonia arrived with a stupendous Ronaldinho free-kick to extend the Blaugrana lead to three and set up a riveting final 45 minutes.
Messi poked home five minutes into the second period to make it four after Ramos had headed over the crossbar. The whole of Spain watched the drama unfold as Madrid began to crank up the heat.
Beckham swept a set-piece a yard over from the left-hand side of the box before the moment that Madrid fans will remember for years and those in Barcelona curse.
Mallorca goal-scorer Varela was put into a similar position than for the goal and beat Iker Casillas in the same fashion but the ball fell an inch wide of the post.
In the following minute Beckham put in a cross-shot free-kick which defeated Moya's extended arm and struck the angle of post and bar, but it was a brief respite as Cannavaro saved them as the visitors bore down three on two and then immediately after it was Ramos' turn to slide across and intercept.
Beckham left the pitch quickly on his last appearance with that ankle injury which has been troubling him, Arsenal man Jose Antonio Reyes arriving in his stead.
Madrid equalised on 69 minutes to set the Bernabeu awash with passion. Robinho passed down the line for substitute Gonzalo Higuain to put in and old hero Raul was there eight yards out to score inside the near post.
Reyes was fortunate not to be sent off for a disgraceful vengeful tackle on Navarro that left the Mallorca defender prostrate for some moments but his team-mates had their heads screwed on. Guti directed the attacks as Mahamadou Diarra almost found a way through and Robinho hit an effort wide before Moya saved brilliantly from the little Brazilian, who could not generally find the target with his crosses and shots.
