IOC to strengthen betting regulations

/2007-12-13/

The International Olympic Committee has called upon former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Lord Condon, to help advise it on how to deal with illegal sports betting. Lord Condon, who headed the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit, has advised a strengthening of betting regulations as well as a system to monitor betting companies according to IOC chief Jacques Rogge.

"Lord Condon also recommended setting up an education programme and a monitoring system to pick up on any abnormalities in betting patterns," Rogge added.

He went on to say that he didn't believe the Olympics were a high-risk area for cheating and illegal betting because of the nature of the event.

"Elite sports men and women at the pinnacle of their careers, at the Olympics, are probably less likely to cheat for betting purposes than they would through drugs," he commented.
