Roulette Basics Made Easy

/2008-07-21/

Roulette has become steadily more popular over the last century and now with the advent of online casinos it’s never been easier to play. One reason for its popularity is that Roulette is one of the only table games in a casino where gamblers can go to relax and have a break from the other games that might require a bit of thinking. Traditionally, Roulette has always been a game for players to socialize and have a few drinks with friends, all while placing a few casual bets.

Roulette is a relatively easy game to learn and it offers a great variety when it comes to betting options. You can choose to bet on a number, color, or a combination of both and if the ball lands on any of your bets, you are paid on odds for that bet. Needless to say, each number or combination of numbers has different odds, depending on how you place your chips on the table.

Two forms of Roulette exist - American and European. While the American table has 38 numbers, the European table only has 37. This may seem insignificant, but having one less number actually allows the European table to create slightly better odds for the player. These days, European tables are becoming harder to find, so you will most likely have to play on the American version, especially in the states.

Learning a few basic Roulette betting strategies can help you win money on any roulette table. There have been a few strategy guides written that can really help you win big if you have the patience and the funds. One thing to remember is to always, always avoid the single number bets. Although they can be tempting with payouts of 35 to 1, single number bets have the worst odds to payout ratio on the table. Also, be sure to avoid the five number bet. This is a bet on numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 at the same time. It's a bet which gives the casino a 7.89% edge over the player, which is not a good thing and should be avoided.

If you want to be successful, try to stick to bets that are closer to the casino's payouts. Your bet should always include a red or black, even or odd, or high (19 - 36) or low (1 - 18). These bets all pay out at odds of 1:1. If you choose to bet like this, you will have a roughly 45% chance of winning, making it a smart way to bet and giving you more time to enjoy at the table as well.

Roulette is nothing more than a game of chance but there are few time-tested strategies that will enable you to win the majority of the time, all while relaxing from the comfort of your home or socializing with friends in a casino. The most important thing is to just have fun!
